Deep Throat Choir
Role. Creative/Art Direction, Production, Camera, Lighting, Editing.
Deep Throat Choir approached me to direct the music video for their new single, Alchemilla. Named for the herbaceous perennial, the song is a letter to toxic masculinity — a celebration of the healing power of tears and the strength that comes with allowing yourself to be vulnerable.
Concept + Approach
Each member of the choir was assigned a tarot card, then filmed individually against green screen. From there I built a series of animated tarot cards around them — constructing fantastical worlds from stock imagery and motion, each one rooted in the symbolism of its card. The final layer came from footage I had previously shot for Chroma.TV: a spiritual tarot reading show, into which I superimposed the new choir cards onto the actual cards being read in the scene. The result was something that felt ritualistic and handmade — a world that existed somewhere between archive footage and the fantastical.
